The author of the essays, published under the name On the border of Mongolia, Georgy Mikhailovich Osokin (circa 1860-1914), is a Russian ethnographer, a member of the Orkhonsk expedition, who lived for a long time in the territory of the southwestern Transbaikal region. In his research, Osokin presents the information and observations he has collected, gives colorful descriptions of the area, describes the way of life of the diverse inhabitants of the border strip of the Transbaikal region and neighboring Mongolia in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The first four chapters are devoted to the Western Transbaikal region, in which the author describes its geographical position, climate, vegetation, population.
