Uklebin, Erkmann-Chatrian is the pseudonym of two French writers, Alexander Chatrian and Emile Erkmann, who wrote many of their works together. Between 1860 and 1880, the author couple, along with Zola, were among the most widely read French writers. In the Russian Empire, Erkmann-Chatrians works have been a great success since the late sixties, owing as much to their direction as to their attention to public life, their healthy humour, their simple realism, sometimes close to ours.
