Original 1878 7 1/4 inch x 9 3/8 inch engraving titled ATTACK AND DEFENCE
Young men in 17th century dress, climbing a ladder to an upper storey window in a large house, while young women lean over the ledge and pelt them with flowers or rebuke them with their fans and an elderly woman wearing a veil and holding a crook approaches from an arched doorway in the right foreground.
Engraved by Lumb Stocks (1812 - 1892). An English engraver. In a long career he produced engravings from paintings by notable artists of the day.
After John Callcott Horsley (1817 - 1903). John Callcott Horsley RA, was an English Academic painter of genre and historical scenes, illustrator, and designer of the first Christmas card. He was a member of the artist's colony in Cranbrook.
