Beschreibung (Anbieter)

Original 1952 Reprint 13 1/2 inch x 8 1/2 inch Colour Print of the 1856 Lithograph titled AMERICAN FOREST SCENE - MAPLE SUGARING

Artists often celebrated the thaw of winter and the beginning of spring with scenes of maple sugaring or “sugaring off” gatherings. These important social events occurred throughout New England and were an opportunity for the residents of a town or village to meet over the first boiling of maple sap into maple sugar..

After Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait (1819 - 1905). A British-American artist who is known mostly for his paintings of wildlife. During most of his career, he was associated with the New York City art scene. During the late 1840s he became aware of the Americas while attending a George Catlin exhibition in Paris. He immigrated to the United States in 1850, where he established a small painting camp in the Adirondacks to paint during summer. Starting in 1852, Currier & Ives reproduced lithographies of his works to publicize him. What also promoted his talent was exhibitions held at the National Academy of Design, New York during the late 19th century showing more than 200 paintings of his. In 1858 he was elected to full membership of the Academy.

Originally produced in 1869 by Currier and Ives. The New York firm of Currier & Ives grew from a printing business established by Nathaniel Currier (1813–1888) in 1835. Expansion led, in 1857, to a partnership with brother-in-law James Merritt Ives (1824–1895). The firm operated until 1907, lithographing over 4,000 subjects for distribution across America and Europe with popular categories including landscape, marines, natural history, genre, caricatures, portraits, history and foreign views. Until the 1880s, images were printed in monochrome, then hand-colored by women who worked for the company at home.

Inscription under the image: “Entered according to Act of Congress in the Year 1856, by N. Currier, in the Clerks Office of the District Court of the Southern District of N. Y. // REPRINTED FROM LITH. BY N. CURRIER”
