Synopsis: Douglas Stewart has selected 72 poet's and painters to present the country as they have seen it. Australia itself has changed, the people viewing it and fashions in art have changed, but despite this, constant themes are found in many of the poems and paintings —space, light and sunshine; harshness and glory in the deserts and plains; pastoral charm and innocence in the romantic days before the turn of the century.
The artists and poets were subject to the same influences, and they depicted the same country; it is not surprising Therefore that Douglas Stewart found it possible to illustrate the poems he chose with paintings that not only complemented the verse, but sometimes illustrated it perfectly.
Australia's favourite and most famous literary names are found in this book; Charles Harpur and Henry Kendall, 'Banjo' Paterson and Henry Lawson, Mary Gilmore and Dorothea Mackellar, Judith Wright and A. D. Hope are but a few, and the painters accompanying them have equal appeal: Sir Arthur Streeton and Tom Roberts, Sir Hans Heysen and Frederick McCubbin, Sir Russell Drysdale, Sidney Nolan and Sir William Dobell, John Perceval and Jon Molvig show some of the changes that have taken place in Australian art.
