What is Pyrography?

Pyrography is from the Greek words: "pyro," meaning heat or fire, and "graphics," meaning expression with lines. People have been “writing” with fire since man discovered fire. In Victorian times it became a popular pastime and was known as pokerwork.  A charcoal stove would be used to heat pokers of various shapes and sizes, the only temperature control would be to let the iron cool down. Remarkable work was produced considering the tools available. Today specialist electric pyrography units with variable temperature are used with either a hot wire fitted into a pen like holder or with pre shaped heads of various designs for branding.Modern artists are using pyrography on all kinds of unusual media. They have burned pictures on wood: they have created realistic feathers, fur and scales on carvings; they have burned three dimensional pictures on leather. The art of pyrography is only limited by the imagination.

About my work

I take great pride in my work and a high degree of patience and skill is needed for finely detailed work, the success of the three dimensional qualities and textures is unique to the medium. I am continually looking for fresh ideas and new designs to pyrograph, many of which will be added to my website so please Add to Favourite Sellers and visit me as regularly as you can. I am always willing to listen to new ideas and undertake private commissions however small so please do not hesitate to contact me.
