Seller's Description
Original 1832 9 1/8 inch x 5 7/8 inch Etching and engraving titled ENTRANCE TO THE ZWINGER PALACE, DRESDEN
Entrance to the Zwinger Palace, Dresden, looking through square arch with sculpted figures at either side, to a staircase beyond, a figure sitting in the left foreground.
Engraved by William Wallis (1796 - c.1830). Engraver of topographical and historical subjects.
From a picture by Samuel Prout (1783 - 1852). Samuel Prout has been recognized as one of the greatest watercolour painters from the golden age of this medium. Born in Norfolk, Prout received his early art education at the Plymouth Grammar School and was first employed as a topographical artist at the age of fourteen to sketch views of Cornwall. He continued work in a similar vein for the following two decades, gaining a strong reputation for his pencil, lithograph and watercolour views of Cambridgeshire, Essex, Wiltshire and Devon, as well as many English rural views.
From 1819, he became a frequent European traveler, making sketches in Belgium, Flanders, Italy, Germany, the Rhine and France. The lithographs he created from these excursions influenced artists throughout Europe. Samuel Prout's masterful attention to atmosphere, detail and the effects of light and shade were without parallel, and an entire generation of artists after him tried in vain to emulate his art.
Image size 5 1/2 inch x 3 3/4 inch
The engraving is in very good condition with general age-related toning and minor defects from handling.
