Seller's Description
Original 10 inch x 8 inch Still of film director WILLIAM DIETERLE seated, talking to cartoonist RICHARD WINNINGTON.
William Dieterle (1893 – 1972) was a German-American actor and film director, who emigrated to the United States in 1930 to leave a worsening political situation. He worked in Hollywood primarily as a director for much of his career, becoming a United States citizen in 1937.
His best-known films include “The Devil and Daniel Webster” (1941), “The Story of Louis Pasteur” (1936) and “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” (1939). His 1937 film “The Life of Emile Zola” won the Academy Award for Best Picture, the second biographical feature to do so.
Richard Winnington (1905 - 1953) was a film critic, cartoonist, illustrator and writer. He was a self taught cariacturist but worked initially as a salesman until 1936 when he obtained a freelance job with the Daily Express - this led to a staff post on the News Chronicle as an illustrator and this association with the paper lasted until his death. From 1943 he wrote the paper's film column, illustrated with his cariacatures and in 1948 his collected cariacatures were published in the book: 'Drawn and Quartered', with an introduction by David Lean.
The still is in very good condition with minor surface marks.
