Widecombe-in-the-Moor /ˈwɪdɪkəm ɪn ðə ˈmʊər/ is a village and large civil parish on Dartmoor National Park in Devon, England.grid referenceSX718767 The name is thought to derive from 'Withy-combe' which means Willow Valley. According to Widecombe's official website, there are 196 households in the village, although its large and sprawling parish stretches for many miles and encompasses dozens of isolated cottages and moorland farms. The parish is surrounded, clockwise from the north, by the parishes of Manaton, Ilsington, Ashburton, Buckland-in-the-Moor, Holneand Dartmoor Forest.[2]
Tourism is a major source of income for Widecombe today, and within a small area of the village there are several gift shops (including a National Trust shop), two cafes and two pubs (the Old Inn and the Rugglestone).
The village is well known for Widecombe Fair, held annually and celebrated by a folksong of the same name, featuring "Old Uncle Tom Cobley and All". Its words were first published in 1880, and the characters from the song are featured in many of the souvenirs on sale in the local shops. Also popular are the traditional Toby Jugs – a type of mug, with a handle, shaped as a three-dimensional caricature of a person's head – sometimes fictional, sometimes a celebrity.
John White Abbott (13 May 1763 – 1851) was an English surgeon and apothecary in Exeter, remembered as a keen amateur painter in both watercolour and oils. He studied in Exeter with Francis Towne, to whom he was also a friend and patron, and his watercolour style was based on Towne's. His watercolours were generally landscapes, for which he toured to the Lake District, but in oil he also did history paintings. After conveniently inheriting an estate at the age of 62, he retired there,[1]and was appointed a deputy lieutenant of Devonshire in 1831.[2]
