Seller's Description
Original 10 3/4 inch x 8 inch Wood Engraved Cartoon page titled WHY READ AT ALL? from Punch, February 23, 1910.
The cartoon is by Lewis Christopher Edward Baumer (1870 - 1963). An English caricaturist who worked for more than fifty years for the British magazine Punch. Baumer was born at St John's Wood, London, England, and had studied at the St John's Wood Art School under A. A. Calderon, at the Royal Academy of Arts, and at the Royal College of Art. His first drawings appeared in the Pall Mall magazine in 1893; in 1897, his first cartoon in Punch appeared. In 1921, he was elected a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours.
Punch, or The London Charivari, was a British weekly magazine of humour and satire established in 1841 by Henry Mayhew and wood-engraver Ebenezer Landells. Historically, it was most influential in the 1840s and 1850s, when it helped to coin the term "cartoon" in its modern sense as a humorous illustration.
