Seller's Description

Detailed Condtion : No chips or cracks. Color appears to have receded or chipped away from the edges in a few places. Enamel layers seem to be in excellent condition.

This is a vintage Satsuma moriage shallow dish or plate.  Marked "Made in China" on the back. This plate has an elaborate hand painted Asian design featuring two phoenix and many floral motifs. The hand applied layers of enamel include elaborate gilt strokes on the top and many small raised white dots, giving the design an elegant 3D effect.

This plate is irregular in shape with somewhat of a shell contour. It measures about 12-1/2" at its widest point and 9-3/4" in the other direction. It is approximately an inch deep. It weighs 2 lbs. 5 ozs.

I am by no means an expert on condition but this plate looks to be in great shape for its age.  There are a few places around the edge where the enamel layer has either chipped away or receded. When a bright light is shone on the plate, the background looks like it may have some very fine crazing.  I believe this is characteristic of Satsuma clay but again, I am not knowledgeable about this art form. The top layers of gilt and the gold edge trim seem to be pretty much intact.

My research tells me this is quite an unusual shape and that the art form was most likely copied from the Japanese.  If you can offer any information, I would be most grateful for the help.  I do not know the age of this plate but my best guess is early to mid 20th century.

This plate will be carefully packed for shipping. Please message me with information or questions.
