AUSTRALASIAN RACING YEAR EDITION 19 - 1999/2000 SEASON

Australasian racegoers have been spoiled rotten in recent years and so it was again during the 2000/2001 Australasian Racing Season.

As in each of the 18 previous editions of the AUSTRALASIAN RACING YEAR, here again is another offering of great Group 1 racing... 90+ elite race triumphs - some controversial and others tinged with tragedy.

Leading the way were Australasia's, ""Ladies of Racing"", champion New Zealand mare SUNLINE and Sydney's favorite daugher, Gai Waterhouse. Although hard to imagine how SUNLINE could improve on 1999-2000, improve she did, winning three Group 1 races including a second BMW Cox Plate plus tasting international success in Hong Kong. And Gai Waterhouse finally emerged from the shadow cast by her legendary father, T. J. Smith, to create a few legends of her own. Not content with winning her fifth Metropolitan and her first Golden Slipper, she crowned her proudest day by also leading in the Slipper minor placegetters, a feat never previously achieved.

Other notable achievements featured include TIE THE KNOT's 11th and 12th Group 1 wins; SIR TRISTRAM regaining his Group 1 world record courtesy of Melbourne Cup winner BREW; the emergence of two and three-year-old stars VISCOUNT and UNIVERSAL PRINCE; the breakthrough Group 1 win for Hong Kong sprint winner FALVELON; and multiple successes at the highest level for jockeys who had never previously hit the height namely Justin Sheehan, Rod Quinn and Peter Mertens.

Controversy and tragedy also played their part: SKALATO's sensational Caulfield Guineas disqualification and, of course, the passing of two gentlemen of the turf, Peter Hayes and Joe Brown and the aptly-named filly UNWORLDLY.
