How I got Troy Donahue’s autograph: 

I was on a plane to Los Angeles, waiting for takeoff.  I was going to attend a Beatles convention and was dressed in Beatles style gear.  I was sitting in an aisle seat in coach and was watching people enter the cabin.  I looked up and recognized Troy Donahue at a distance.  As he approached my row, I smiled and nodded my head to let him know that I recognized him.

I did not want to disturb his privacy so I just kept reading my magazine as he passed by me.  A few minutes later, I felt a tug on the elbow of my jacket.  It was Troy, who happened to be sitting in the row behind me and across the aisle.  He talked to me the whole hour flight.  He told me that he had just visited in daughter in Mesa, AZ who just had a baby.  (This was in the 1990s.)  Seeing that I was a Beatles fan, he told me that he was a friend of Elvis.  He also updated me on what he had been doing in the past few years, including taking a 1960s celebrity cruise as a special guest.  Time went by really fast. 

I wanted to get his autograph, but didn’t have anything for him to sign except for my ticket envelope.  He signed it:  “To Kathy.  I thought you’d never ask!  Love Troy Donahue”

So as we were all deplaning, Troy kept walking with me to the baggage area, even though he only had a carryon bag.  Then he walked me to the curb where I was catching my hotel shuttle. Then he asked me to dinner that night.  Unfortunately, I had to decline because I was having dinner with a convention guest from Liverpool.  BTW I was in my 50s at the time so having a celebrity ask me out to dinner was a big deal.  I was very flattered.

I’ve included a photo of Troy, which was copied off the internet.  It is printed on regular paper.  When I met him at that time, I still remembered him as that guy.  Absolutely charming.
