Henry Wirz was a Swiss-born American military officer and
convicted war criminal who served in the Confederate States Army during
the American Civil War (1861-1865). He was deemed a traitor, and hanged on November 10, 1865, in Washington, D.C., the only Confederate officer executed as a war criminal.
