Seller's Description
Traditional Japanese Suruga Kite by: Asako Kato
With original paperwork
Handsome original painted kite in the traditional suruga form, with paper over bamboo ribs. This great design features a closeup portrait of a samurai dressed for battle, swords drawn.
About the Artist:
- Made by a female kitemaker, Asako Kato, one of only three women kite makers working in Sizuoka, Japan (Shizuoka Prefecture (formerly Suruga)) in the early 20th century.
- From Kite Lines magazine, Summer 1991: "Asako Kato was taught by her father when none of her brothers wanted to take up the profession. She makes suruga kites with the assistance of her daughter Yuki Fukushima. She showed me her beautiful catalog: 52 paintings of Kabuki actors and samurai that appear on her kites. "
- Her father was the renowned Tatsusaburo Kato.
- A portfolio of the father's work sold several decades ago: "He was the third of Suruga-dako tradition in Shizuoka prefecture. His daughter, Asako, is now continuing the traditional kite designs from Suruga. The same portfolio was sold by Brockhaus Antiquarium in Stuttgart, Germany for more than 2000 Euro"
