Seller's Description

Original 1963 Russian 25 1/2 inch x 41 inch Poster for the 1962 Nikola Korabov Bulgarian Drama TOBACCO (TYUTYUN), based on the novel by Dimitar Dimov and starring Nevena Kokanova, Yordan Matev, Miroslava Stoyanova, Ivan Kasabov and Nikola Popov.

The adaptation of Dimitur Dimov’s novel, Tobacco, made at considerable expense, was to have been a representative example of Bulgarian film work. The inventiveness of director Nikola Korabov, however, found room to assert itself in only a few scenes, where Vulo Radev’s photography contributed hugely to their originality. Pictures of the social oppression in prewar Bulgaria and the subsequent partisan fighting was conveyed by Korabov in the tested style of socialist realist historical frescoes. In addition, he filled the film with model characters: the bestial policemen, the drunken capitalist, and the mustachioed foreign agent stood opposed to the golden-haired angelic young girl, the unbending strikers, and the ideal “positive hero”. Tobacco won the Grand Prix at the official festival of Bulgarian cinema at Varna in 1963.

Poster art by Sergey Ignatievich Datskevich (1919 - 1977). A graduate of Art Schools in Kiev and Kharkov, Datskevich began designing posters in 1949.

The poster is in very good folded condition with a small piece out of the right edge, minor fold wear and minor tattering along the top edge.
