Seller's Description
Detailed Condtion : Minor scratches and dings to gold trim but it's almost completely intact. Bird painting was added to a Haviland "Oxford" dinner plate by artist "E. Armstrong".
This is a dinner plate marked "Theodore Haviland New York" on the back (Made in America). It is in the "Oxford" pattern which has quarter inch gold trim around the rim and two thin gold lines. This particular plate later had a scene added which was painted by artist "E. Armstrong". A blue bird with a yellow belly and several delicate cherry blossom branches are beautifully rendered in soft pastels. The background has also been painted in very soft shades ranging from the palest green to the palest pink. I am not sure how the design was applied but it is completely smooth to the touch and feels like it was fired in some way. The artist's signature is on the back.

This plate measures about 10-3/4" in diameter. The quarter inch gold band is completely intact although there are a few very minor scratches and nicks in the trim. There are no chips or cracks although the plate does show some minor signs of handling, most likely incurred during the painting process. I believe it could be used as a dinner plate but the artwork certainly lends itself to display.
