From the Editor
Dear WORKBASKET Reader:
Plan to celebrate the last days of summer with a cookout for family and friends. Our idea is to keep it simple by serving everyone’s favorites — grilled hamburgers and hot dogs along with the usual picnic fare of baked beans, deviled eggs, potato chips, a chilled salad and beverage. The salad shown by our model on the cover is a tasty, but easy, broccoli salad that that can be prepared the night before.
Broccoli Salad
1 bunch broccoli
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1 purple or white onion, chopped
8 slices bacon, fried and crumbled
Dressing:
½ cup mayonnaise
¼ cup sugar
1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
Wash and cut broccoli buds and stems less than ‘/2 inch diameter. Add onion, shredded cheese and crumbled bacon. Mix mayonnaise, sugar and red wine vinegar. Pour over broccoli mixture and marinate several hours or overnight.
The cooling beverage being served is a refreshing blend of two parts unsugared iced tea with 1 part cranapple (or cranberry) juice.
