Sam Peckinpah's The Wild Bunch is one of the greatest of all films. An obvious influence on Tarantino (just noticed the other day that the scene in Inglourious Basterds, when Hugo the German Bastard has a flashback of being whipped by his old captors, is a direct visual quotation from this movie) and all other filmmakers who have dared to make intelligent action movies, Peckinpah in fact saw deeper into the violent and conflicted male psyche than any of the tough-guy directors he influenced, including Quentin--- for which he has never and may never get full credit--- understanding in his guts how the male need for combat and conflict is a thirst that can never be quenched. Sure, The Wild Bunch is a Guy Flick--- quite arguably the ultimate example--- yet one about a bunch of grizzled old men whose day has passed, and are being forced, in the 20th century, to realize it. When you're young, The Wild Bunch may seem like adrenaline escapism; as you get older, it seems more and more like a serious and even sad meditation on its themes, which were relevant in the youth-obsessed Sixties, and here to stay.
