Album Notes
Tuscadero: Melissa Farris (guitar, vocals, vibraphone, organ); Margaret McCartney (guitar, vocals, flute); Phil Satlof (bass, piano, tympani, background vocals); Jack Hornady (drums).Additional personnel: Marc Waterman (organ, background vocals); Walter Sear (Theremin); Bil Emmons, Steve Raskin (background vocals).Engineers: Bil Emmons, Rob Christiansen, Ian Jones, Geoff Turner.Recorded at Sear Sound, New York, New York; Omega, Rockville, Maryland; Inner Ear Studios and Evil Genius Studios, Arlington, Virginia. Originally released on Teen Beat (159).It's appropriate this Washington, D.C., mixed-sex quartet was named after Pinky and Leather Tuscadero, the socially progressive cousins who hung with the Fonz on TV's "Happy Days." The Tuscaderos added some bad-girl grit to the sitcom's sterile '50s atmosphere, while remaining enticing and sugary. The same can be said of Melissa Farris and Margaret McCartney's songs. Their amateur harmonies and three-chord bubblegum pop tunes lower the defenses, while their brash lyrics and tight, punky delivery push their agenda of girls-first ideology without riot-grrrl-style bludgeoning. The obvious musical reference points for THE PINK ALBUM, which was released by independent Teen Beat Records in 1995 and picked up by Elektra in 1996, are such '90s rockers as Liz Phair (risque content and pop quotient) and Kim Deal (punky throttle). But Tuscadero avoids Phair's and Deal's philosophic word-play, choosing instead to simply say the kinds of things boys have been saying for years. In "Hollywood Handsome," the singer gropes for a low-IQ girl-toy; in "Just My Size," she keeps a second-stringer around in case the first stringer's a dud. "Candy Song" is an extended "my guy's sweet" metaphor. This is ladies doin' what they wanna, with knowing confidence and a four-on-the-floor rush.Personnel: Margaret McCartney (vocals, guitar, flute); Melissa Farris (vocals, guitar, organ, vibraphone); Phil Satlof (piano, timpani); Marc Waterman (organ, background vocals); Jack Hornady (drums); Walter E. Sear (Theremin); Steve Raskin, Bill Emmons (background vocals).Audio Mixers: Jamie Campbell; Marc Waterman.Recording information: Evil Genius Studios, Arlington, VA; Inner Ear Studios, Arlington, VA; Sear Sound Studio, New York, NY.Illustrator: Tuscadero.Photographer: John Falls.Tuscadero's appealing jumble of junk culture and punk-pop might occasionally come across as a bit too juvenile -- it's rather disarming to hear twenty-somethings so nostalgic for their childhood -- but the rush of sweet hooks and fuzzy guitars make The Pink Album a delight. Sure, the band's rough around the edges, especially since neither Melissa Farris or Margaret McCartney have particularly strong voices, but its amateurish edge is part of its appeal. The Pink Album was originally released in a rushed, lo-fi edition on TeenBeat in 1994. Two years later, the album was re-issued by Elektra in a remixed version, boasting several re-recorded tracks. While the cleaner, punchier sound may offend some indie purists, it actually makes the record more fun. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Great DC band.
Square spot in upper right hand corner is from my price stickers and is on jewel case or plastic wrapping if sealed.
Note: Most Import and Indie records are not sealed. I take the record out of the sleeve when shipping to protect the
sleeve from splits in shipping. If this is a problem then let me know when buying and I will not take it out of the
sleeve, but I will not be responsible for sleeve damage in the post.
