Seller's Description

The Odes of Anacreon translated into English verse with Notes by Thomas Moore, Esquire

J. Carpenter; London; 1803  Third Edition

Text is in English and some Greek.

12mo size, (2) two-volume three-quarter leather bound set with deckle edged pages.  Maroon buckram centers the covers which are trimmed in leather at all corners and with an extended spine on both front and back cover.  The leather is finished in a bright gilt border.  Five raised bands decorate the spine.  The raised bands are decorated in gilt dots.  A plain gilt border decorates the very top and bottom of the spine.  Just above the border on the bottom of the spines, and also in gilt, is "1803," the year this volume was published.  The title, "Odes of Anacreon," also in gilt, appears between the first and second raised bands, and underneath each title, circled in gilt is the number 1 or 2, indicating which volume it is.

Volume 1:  Frontispiece illustration of Moore engraved by James Health from a miniature by A. Plimmer.

163 toned, deckle edged pages with bright gilt topstain.  (The gilt topstain is most visible in our last photograph.)  Red cloth endpapers (see them in our fifth photograph) match the clothbound cover and are backed with what appears to be ivory laid paper.

There is some transfer to abutting pages, both fore and aft, of a ghostly effect of the illustrated frontispiece, minor chipping to the leather at top of spine and the top and bottom raised bands on spine are rubbed; name penciled in tiny script on top of title page.

Volume 2:  An engraving of a bust of Anacreon by H. Richter is the frontispiece illustration, which the name in Greek letters below.  Beneath the illustration it gives the book's publication information:  "Published January 1, 1803 by J & T Carpenter, Old Bond Street."

148 toned, deckle edged pages with bright gilt topstain.  Red cloth endpapers match the clothbound cover and are backed with what appear to be ivory laid paper.

Tiny chip missing from top of leather spine, rubbing to side of spine near bottom on front cover and top raised ring on spine.  There is a small scrape to leather on top left front cover and smaller one near bottom of back cover.  Penciled price on fep, name penciled in tiny script on top of title page.

Thomas Moore was an Irish poet, entertainer and translator.  Moore is considered Ireland's national poet.  He studied law at Middle Temple in London which is referred to on the title page.

We also have an 1800 Thomas Moore edition of the Odes of Anacreon with T. Nugent engravings, in a separate listing.

BUYERS LOCATED OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES - PLEASE NOTE:

Receipt of your item may be delayed if it has to go through custom inspection in your country.  Occasionally, this adds days or weeks to delivery.

Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. These charges are the buyer's responsibility.

Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to buying.

Customs fees are normally charged by the shipping company or collected when you pick the item up. These fees are not additional shipping charges.

We won't under-value merchandise or mark the item as a gift on customs forms. Doing that is against U.S. and international laws.

During peak shipping times, it may take weeks to have your item clear customs.  We’ve had some items arrive in Europe in a week, but a package to South America once took six weeks to arrive!  Again, you’ll have to check with the customs office in your country if your item hasn’t been received.

Restrictions in your country may not allow us to ship certain items.

Many countries do not allow shipments of coins or precious metals, for example.  Some media, including computer software, music CDs or DVDs may be restricted for sale outside the United States.

VHS and DVDs are formatted differently for different countries.

If you are purchasing a VHS videotape, please note the format your machine requires before you make your purchase.  Most of our tapes are NTSC format (it is specified in the listing what the format is) which will not work in most video players in Europe and Australia.  We routinely contact anyone overseas who purchases a VHS video to ask them to check if their machine can play an NTSC tape before we ship.

Many DVDs also have a specific format by country.  If you are purchasing a DVD, please make sure the DVD is a format that will play in your machine.

It is possible that anyone who uses stolen images or text may not even have the item they are trying to sell and that their intention is to defraud you.  We don’t want anyone to use our images or text to try and sell you something they don’t have.
