Starr’s Desert Breeze Bag

Experience Level: Beginner
Skills Used: Knit and Purl, Cast On and Cast Off

Design Considerations:

Using wonderful Batik fabric and this pattern, I have made many bags which are all different. You can make subtle changes that give the bag a distinctive look. I start with each color fabric cut on the bias into strips. These I put in separate bags and as I am knitting I tie on with whichever color I choose. Sometimes I mix 3 colors at random or make rows of the same color. I have made the back, front and sides using different fabrics for each.

The Desert Breeze bag can be made in any size by adjusting the number of stitches you cast on. I consider the measurements given in this pattern to be large. Since you will not use a gauge, the way you knit will also determine how big the bag will be.

I chose to start this bag with the back because that is the most involved part because of the flap. You can choose not to put a flap on the bag in which case you may want to put a zipper or snap in the lining to close the bag.

The sides, bottom and strap are all one piece. The length will depend on the measurement of both sides and the bottom. If you want the strap to be shoulder length you will need to make it longer. The ring is used for making the final adjustment for the strap. The ring can be made of beads strung on heavy beading wire or anything round with a hole in the middle that will accommodate the eight stitch width.

All the pieces are put together with short ties including the strap. When you finish putting your bag together you may want to add more ties and embellish with beads, yarn, crystals, charms, etc.

This bag is designed for beginning knitters, which I love teaching, because they are truly amazed at what they can do with fabric and knitting. You can give this bag a touch of class or make it light and full of whimsy. Adding buttons, beads, charms, flowers, yarn or any other thing you can think of will set your bag off and be the talk of the party. I make the front panel next which is just like the back but without the flap.
