Text from the free encyclopedia WIKIPEDIA may appear below to give a little background information (internal links may not work) :
*************
Saint Brelade is one of the twelve parishes of Jersey. Its population was 10,568 as of 2011,[2] and it occupies the southwestern part of the island. It is the only parish to border only one other parish, St. Peter. The parish is the second-largest parish by surface area, covering 7,103 vergées (3,157 acres or 12.78 km²), which is 11% of the total land surface of the island.
St. Brelade has some of the most popular bays in Jersey, with St. Brelade's Bay, Ouaisné, Portelet and parts of both St. Ouen's Bay and St. Aubin's Bay falling within the parish boundaries. The village (or town) of Saint Aubin was originally a fishing port facing St. Helier on the opposite side of St. Aubin's Bay. St Aubin was historically the main centre of population in the parish, but residential development at Les Quennevais has shifted that centre of population.
Jersey's prison is situated at La Moye, and the island's desalination plant is also sited in the parish.
The lighthouse at La Corbière features on the Jersey £5 note (see Jersey pound) and the Jersey 20-pence piece (see coins of the Jersey pound)
The traditional nickname for St. Bréladais (inhabitants of St. Brelade) is carpéleuses (caterpillars).
Note on John Hinde:
John Hinde was an English photographer who set up John Hinde Ltd in Dublin, Ireland in the early 1960s. He produced most of the earlier cards himself before employing other photogaphers such as E.Nägele, E. Ludwig, D. Noble and other names who spent a long time getting just the right view, usually with people in the foreground. The prints were then artistically hand processed and manipulated in Italy (long before digital production) before being published. His company was also closely associated with Butlins and they produced many of their cards. The company’s cards have become popular with collectors in recent years due to exhibitions and being featured in books, particularly by photographer and postcard collector Martin Parr. They were influential in the development of commercial photography and postcard images and now are regarded as miniature works of art and social records in themselves, particularly those of the 1960s and 1970s.
