Additional descriptive notes (if applicable): the full text on the back of the postcard reads: The 1916 Rising began on Easter Monday (April 24), when about 1600 men and women of Padraig Pearce's Irish Volunteers and James Connolly's Irish Citizen Army seized the General Post Office (GPO) and other buildings throughout the city. Savage street-fighting erupted over the following days, as 15,000 British soldiers surrounded the outnumbered rebels and isolated their strong points. Field guns and a naval vessel bombarded central Dublin, causing much destruction. Although seen as a military failure, the courage of the Rising's executed leaders revitalized the Independence movement and inspired the creation of a free Irish State in 1922.
