CROMWELL'S STATE SEAL
The State Seal of Charles I. bore the King's effigy ; but when Cromwell attained to power, in place of substituting his own
portrait on the seal he was struck by the idea of representing the map of England and Ireland. As, however, the war with Sc. tland
still continued, he coolly left out that country altogether. As throwing a light on the knowledge of geography of the period, this seal
is a relic of the greatest interest..
