I offer a poster art postcard: 1908 - 1928 Plus de Sceptiques.

Despite the rapid progress in aviation after 1908 when Henry Farman made the first one kilometre flight in a closed circuit in Europe, there were plenty of sceptics as to the future use of the aeroplane during the following two decades. 'God would have given us wings if He had intended us to fly' was the smug assertion of the unconvinced.  France took to persuading the doubters by means of posters and publications issued by a Paris organisation, the Comite Francaise de Propagande Aeronautique. The committee's aim was not only to confound the disbelievers but to foster the spirit of aviation in France.
In 1928, this amusing poster featuring the fictional character Joseph Prudhomme was distributed by the committee in joint commemoration of that year's sixty-five thousand kilometre round-the-world flights by Costes and Le Brix and Farman's feat 20 years earlier. The poster shows the ghost of Prudhomme, the narrow-minded, solemn, and self-satisfied petit bourgeois, watching in wonder as his bumbling son hurries to catch a modern airliner. In another poster...Prudhomme observes that in 1842 he didn't believe in the railway either.
