Seller's Description
Original 1771 6 1/8 inch x 10 7/8 inch copper plate engraving titled PERSPECTIVE VIEW OF NEW ABERDEEN, IN THE COUNTY OF ABERDEEN, OR MAIR.
The city of Aberdeen began as two separate burghs: Old Aberdeen at the mouth of the river Don; and New Aberdeen, a fishing and trading settlement, where the Denburn waterway entered the river Dee estuary.
After John Slezer (before 1650 – 1717). John Slezer was a Dutch - or German-born military engineer and artist. He arrived in the Kingdom of Scotland in 1669, and was appointed Surveyor of his Majesties Stores and Magazines, which involved compiling detailed surveys of the country's fortifications. He is best known for his Theatrum Scotiae, a series of engravings of views of castles, abbeys, towns, and seats of the nobility he encountered whilst travelling throughout Scotland in his capacity as Captain of the Artillery Company.
From ‘The complete English Traveller; a new survey and Description of England and wales. Containing a full Account of whatever is curious and entertaining in the several Counties of England and Wales, The Isles of Man, Jersey, Guernsey, and other islands adjoining to, and dependant on the Crown of Great Britain’ by Nathaniel Spencer.
Printed for John Cooke, Shakespeare’s Head, Paternoster Row, London 1771.
Page size 9 inch x 14 inch
The engraving, on chain-laid paper, is in very good condition with minor age related toning. Reverse side blank.
