20inch x 30inch Poster The arrival of Commodore Matthew C. Perry's "black ships" in Tokyo Bay in 1853 helped persuade the Japanese to negotiate a treaty. Perry had more firepower than all the coastal artillery defending Tokyo Bay utilizing "Gunship Diplomacy." In 1854, his second visit, he arrived with four heavily armed ships including the USS Powhatan was a sidewheel steam frigate in the United States Navy. The Black Ships (in Japanese, ??, kurofune, Edo Period term) was the name given to Western vessels arriving in Japan in the 16th and 19th centuries. There is a border around the image. The image size is correct.
