Original 1795 14 3/8 inch x 18 1/4 inch Etching and Engraving titled PAUL EXPELLING THE EVIL SPIRIT FROM THE DAMSEL OF PHILIPPI
St Paul standing on the right, a staff in his left hand, pointing upwards, while two men support a swooning woman on the left as a spirit goes out of her in a whisp of smoke.
Print by James Fittler (1758 - 1835). A British engraver of portraits and landscapes and an illustrator of books. He was appointed by King George III to be his marine engraver.
After the painting by John Opie (1761 - 1807). A Cornish historical and portrait painter. He painted many great men and women of his day, including members of the British Royal Family, and others who were most notable in the artistic and literary professions.
Published by Thomas Macklin (1752/3 – 1800), Poets Gallery, Fleet Street
Inscription: Lettered below the image with the title, biblical reference 'Vide Acts. Ch. 16. ve. 16. 18.' and 'J. Opie R.A. Pinxt. / J. Fittler Sculpt. / London, Publish'd August 22d. 1795, by Thos. Macklin, Poets Gallery, Fleet Street.'
The etching is in very good condition with some foxing and general age-related toning and minor defects from handling.
