Original 9 7/8 inch x 7 3/4 inch Portrait of LILLIAN GISH in the 1958 Anthony Asquith War Film ORDERS TO KILL, based on the novel by Donald Downes.
Lillian Gish (1893 – 1993) was an American actress, director and screenwriter. Her film acting career spanned 75 years, from 1912, in silent film shorts, to 1987. Gish was called "The First Lady of American Cinema", and is credited with pioneering fundamental film performance techniques. In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked Gish as the 17th greatest female movie star of classic Hollywood cinema.
Photograph by John Jay (1920 - 2005). John Jay was born in 1920 in London. His career began at the age of fifteen when he left school to become a photographer’s apprentice. He was one of Britain’s top motion picture photographers who traveled the world and worked on the sets of such films as Holiday Camp, Good-Time Girl, The Quatermass Xperiment, The Curse of Frankenstein, The Day the Earth Caught Fire, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, 2001: A Space Odyssey and Star Wars.
The portrait is in very good condition with minor surface marks.
