Seller's Description
Original British 11 inch x 17 inch Double-Sided Trade Advertisement from Kinematograph Weekly for the 1951 Paul Rotha Drama NO RESTING PLACE, based on the novel by Ian Niall and starring Michael Gough, Eithne Dunne, Noel Purcell, Brian O’Higgins, Jack MacGowran, Diana Campbell, Maureen O’Sullivan and Christy Lawrence.
The brilliant British documentary filmmaker Paul Rotha made his feature-film debut with 1950’s No Resting Place. Filmed on location in Ireland, the film is a lightly fictionalized study of that country’s itinerant workmen. Michael Gough plays tinker Alec Kyle, whose life is thrown into turmoil when he accidentally kills a man. Kyle spends the rest of the film evading Guard Mannigan (Noel Purcell), a civil servant who relies on instinct rather than scientific deduction to get his man. Without ever trying to elicit sympathy for his characters, director Rotha manages to compellingly detail the miserable living and working conditions of Ireland’s nomad artisans.
Paul Rotha (1907 - 1984) was a leading figure in the British documentary movement. He studied at London’s Slade School of Fine Arts and began his career as a painter, book illustrator, and stage designer. He won the International Theatre Design Award at the 1925 Paris Exhibition and in 1927 he became art critic for The Connoisseur. He made his initial contact with films in 1928 as a prop man, then as an assistant designer to Alfred Hitchcock, but was fired later that year after he published a scathing article on the stagnant state of British cinema. In 1930 he published The Film Till Now, a critical historical survey of world cinema that remained a standard source for film students for many years.
In 1931 Rotha joined John Grierson’s documentary unit at the Empire Marketing Board but he left after only six months to pursue his own projects as a producer-director of documentaries, several of them noatble for their innovative style and sincere social consciousness. His World Is Rich (1947) was nominated fopr an Oscar.
