National Parks Centennial - Old Faithful, Yellowstone
EXTREMELY RARE ZIP CODE ERROR

First Day Cover for the stamp commemorating the 50th anniversary of the National Park Service (Scott #1453). The cachet produced by Fleetwood is a gold and blue picture of Old Faithful geyser in Yellowstone Park, Wyoming. Below the picture are embossed the words, "National Parks Centennial 1872 - 1972"

In addition to the 8 cent National Parks Centennial stamp depicting Old Faithful, the cover also has the 5 cent Yellowstone stamp (Scott #744). The cover was canceled on the First Day of Issue of the 8 cent stamp, March 1, 1972, in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. The ZIP code used, however, is 83020. This ZIP code is an invalid ZIP code. The ZIP Code was discontinued 3 years prior to its being used on these covers. The hand cancel appearing on the cover was applied in Mammoth, Wyoming, the headquarters of the National Park Service's administrative facilities for Yellowstone National Park, in an over-the-counter transaction. It is estimated that a total of only 13,000 pieces of mail were processed through Mammoth on March 1. It is not known how many of these were philatelic covers. This compares with the 847,500 First Day Covers that were processed for this stamp. (Ref.: Linn's Stamp News, March 27, 1972, p. 16)

The cover was cancelled on the reverse side on the same day in Gardner, Montana, on March 1, 1972. Gardner is the northern entrance to Yellowstone. The reverse side of the cover provides a brief description of Yellowstone Park.
