This period in Italian art and especially in Umbria and Tuscany is connected with the life of St. Francis of Assisi. Francis of Assisi is the son of a rich merchant. At 25, he renounced his inheritance and founded an order of beggar monks, the Order of Franciscans. The saint died in 1226 and was canonized two years later.
