Yo-yo Accents - Wild West by Marcia Layton

This collection of six yo-yo designs features projects with a western theme. The designs are all shown on tea towels, but are not limited to just that use. They can be added to handmade or commercial clothing, totes, hats, accessories, bedding, decorator items and so much more. They add a fun, whimsical and personal touch to gifts of all kinds.

Use the Clover “Quick” Yo-Yo Makers, a needle and a strong hand quilting thread to make the yo-yos for these projects. Each individual project will specify the size and shape yo-yo to make. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for consistently sized and evenly gathered yo-yos.

If you prefer, you can make circle yo-yos in the traditional way:
1. For each yo-yo, first cut out a circle of fabric. Turn the outside edge under by 1/4” and with a needle and thread, run a gathering stitch all around. Overlap the first gathering stitch.
2. Pull on the thread to gather the yo-yo.
3. Secure the finished yo-yo with a knot and flatten into shape.

Use the following measurements to make traditional yo-yo fabric circles that correspond to the yo-yo maker sizes:
Extra-large: 5” diameter circle
Large: 4” diameter circle
Small: 3” diameter circle
Extra-small: 2” diameter circle

Use a hand appliqué stitch and matching sewing thread to sew completed yo-yos in place on the towel or other project.

To hand appliqué:
1. Bring the needle and thread up from the back of the towel at the edge of a yo-yo, catch the edge and go back down right next to where the thread came up.
2. Come back up about 1/8 inch away from the first stitch and catch the edge of the yo-yo. Continue around the yo-yo until it is fully attached.
3. Finish with a knot in the back of the towel.

The projects are all shown on commercial tea towels, some with decorative hems and others in bright checks and colors. You can make up the towels exactly as shown or embellish them with any other size or color of rickrack or trim. Also, because towel sizes differ, you will need to measure across the bottom edge of each towel to get your measurement for the length of trim required to complete the project.
