Famous Russian Orchestral Works
Music lovers in Russia rarely had the opportunity to become acquainted with new compositions by their compatriots in orchestral concerts in public. Despite the fact that it was part of the prestige of every royal court in a Europe under absolutist rule to employ as large an orchestra as possible, it was the church which remained the most important vehicle of culture in Russia up into thc nineteenth century. Its strict censorship prevented any deviation from the official liturgical music centred around the Byzantine rites and which dispensed with any instrumental accompaniment. As late as 1636, figtey carriages containing musical instruments were burned on the banks of the Moskva as being the work of the devil. It was not until Peter the Great (1682 - 1725) came to power that any change took place in the assessment of instrumental music. In his forced effort to Europeanise the gigantic, poorly-developed empire, more and more western European musical styles, composers and musicians were imported. In 1740, a school of music was annexed to Czarina Anna’s court orchestra, in which ten young people were given tuition as orchestral musicians. Nonetheless, the empire, in which only eighteen per cent of the population lived in the towns and cities, retained the status of a developing country under foreign influence as far as music was concerned. The Petersburg Philharmonic Society, founded in 1802, played a total precisely 205 concerts over a one hundred year period. Had it not been for the Petersburg Music Society (1859) and the “Free Music School” being established, the outlook for an independent musical culture developing in Russia would have been even bleaker. Some of the works presented here were first performed by one of the three associations .- only the “Circus Polka” for a young elephant belongs clearly to the USA. It was written by Stravinsky in 1942, having been commissioned by the Barnum and Bailey Circus — the choreography war performed by George Balanchine, and the composer gave this musical just a particular punch-line by working a quotation from a military march by Schubert into the polka at the end.
