Seller's Description
Original 1842 8 1/4 inch x 5 3/4 inch Etching and Engraving titled LEONORA D’ESTE
Eleonora d'Este was a Ferrarese noblewoman. She was the first daughter of Alfonso I d'Este, Duke of Ferrara and his second wife Lucrezia Borgia - as his first daughter, Alfonso named her after his mother Eleanor of Naples.
Engraved by Henry Thomas Ryall (1811 - 1867). An eminent nineteenth-century line, stipple and mixed-method engraver, Henry Thomas Ryall was known for his portraits and his sporting, historical and genre subjects. After studying engraving techniques under Samuel William Reynolds, Ryall lived and worked in London. Ryall was appointed historical engraver to the queen, in which capacity he engraved the portraits of many members of the royal family.
From a painting by Frank Stone (1800 - 1859). Painter of historical genre and portraits; born in Manchester and began to study art at the age of 24, when 31 moved to London; exhibited mostly watercolours at first at the Royal Watercolour Society and after having been made a member resigned in 1847; Associate Royal Academician in 1851; Both he and his son Marcus Stone, also a painter, were friends of Charles Dickens.
From The gallery of Byron beauties: ideal pictures of the principal female characters in Lord Byron's poems.
The engraving is in very good condition. Reverse side blank.
