Original 1866 6 3/4 inch x 9 3/4 inch engraving titled JAMES II RECEIVING NEWS OF THE LANDING OF THE PRINCE OF ORANGE

A crowded room in a palace, with King James II seated in an armchair at centre, dropping a letter from his hand with a bleak expression on his face, comforted by his wife. There are two clerics seated at the table beside him, on which stands a crucifix. There is a man hiding behind a screen at left and a group of elegantly dressed women at right, two at the front playing with a young child.

Engraving by Frederick Heath (1825 - 1883). Frederick Heath and his father Charles engraved the world’s first stamp: the Penny Black.

After Edward Matthew Ward (1816 - 1879). An English narrative painter best known for his murals in the Palace of Westminster depicting episodes in British history from the English Civil War to the Glorious Revolution.

Published in the Art Journal by J.S. Virtue & Co. Ltd., London.
