Few have been totally convincing but one - the bushman legend - has endured. This book presents evidence that it was discontented city intellectuals in the 1890s who romanticised the bushman and his notions of mateship and egalitarianism, challenges this legend and argues a new interpretation: that a guilt-stricken, culturally bashful upper middle class promoted the mateship myth and failed to install its own values. The book is intended for students, specialists and general readers.
