Seller's Description
Original 1964 Russian first release 21 1/4 inch x 31 3/4 inch Poster for the 1952 Anthony Asquith Comedy THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST, based on the play by Oscar Wilde and starring Michael Redgrave, Joan Greenwood, Michael Denison, Edith Evans, Dorothy Tutin, Margaret Rutherford, Miles Malleson and Richard Wattis.
The last and most popular of his social comedies, Oscar Wilde's play The Importance of Being Earnest opened at London's St James' theatre on Valentine's Day 1895. Its initial run, however, was cut short by Wilde's prosecution for immorality, which ironically was brought by one of his social acquaintances of the time, the then Home Secretary (and later Prime Minister) Herbert Asquith. In a somewhat bizarre turn, Asquith's son Anthony eventually made this first film version.
The poster art is by Grebenshikov
The poster is in very good folded condition.
