Seller's Description

Original 1841 9 1/4 inch x 6 1/2 inch Engraving titled THE HONOURABLE MISS FORESTER

Portrait of Selina Louisa, Countess of Bradford.

”I come a beggar to you at the eleventh hour, for a few lines to illustrate a portrait of the Honourable Miss Forester, a very charming young lady. Will you write me a page of verse for the portrait in question? The young lady is seated, with a little dog on her lap, which she looks at rather pensively; she is fair, with light hair, and is in mourning. She is sister to Lord Forester, and her sisters, Lady Chesterfield and the Hon. Mrs George Anson, are remarkable for their beauty. Pray excuse this unreasonable request, and let your brilliant imagination picture the young beauty, whose portrait is to be illustrated.” The Countess of Blessington’s letter to the poet Dr. William Beattie, July 24th, 1841.

Engraved by John Henry Robinson (1796 - 1871). A line, stipple and occasional mezzotint engraver from Bolton. He was apprenticed to James Heath between 1814-1818 and then set up initially as a book-illustrator. He engraved portraits and prints after popular contemporary painters, e.g. Landseer. He fought a long battle to win respect from the Royal Academy as a line-engraver and was eventually elected Associate Member of the Royal Academy in 1856.

From the portrait by Sir Francis Grant (1803 - 1878).

Published in 1841 by Longman & Co., Paternoster Row, London

Image size 5 3/4 inch x 4 1/2 inch

The engraving is in very good condition with minor edge wear.
