Seller's Description

Detailed Condtion : please see the full item description below

DESCRIPTION Two scarce antique English Georgian solid sterling silver wine labels 'MOUNTAIN' (re-engraved) & 'PORT' on suspension chains. Hester Bateman designed this form circa 1770 and it has been copied by a few other makers. The Hester Bateman mark is the 4mm version registered 3rd December 1774 and the duty mark is the second version used from 1786. Hester's mark was last seen in 1790 when she retired (died 1794) so we can accurately date these pieces 1786-1790.

CONDITION excellent although I suspect that the 'MOUNTAIN' has been engraved over a well executed erasure. The serifs are usually the deepest part of an engraving and the old serifs have been skilfully incorporated into the 'MOUNTAIN' engraving with the exception of the 'O'. I see no reason for a serif in the bottom of the 'O'. My best guess from the serifs is that this was originally 'SHERRY'. Perhaps an older person simply preferred the old fashioned word for sherry or, more likely, a dodgy dealer thought the scarce Mountain would sell for money. I have devalued the possibly re-engraved label by 50%.
