Seller's Description

Original 1894 8 inch x 5 1/4 inch engraving titled GROUP OF AFRICAN ANTELOPES, VIZ., TORA ANTELOPE; BLESSBOK AND BONTEBOK; AND KORIGUM.

The tora hartebeest (Alcelaphus buselaphus tora) is an extremely endangered antelope, native to Eritrea and Ethiopia. It has possibly been extirpated from Sudan. One of the most critically endangered large mammals in the world, it is threatened by poaching and habitat loss.
The blesbok or blesbuck is an antelope endemic to South Africa. It has a distinctive white face and forehead which inspired the name, because bles is the Afrikaans word for a blaze such as one might see on the forehead of a horse.
The bontebok is an antelope found in South Africa, Lesotho and Namibia. The bontebok has two subspecies; the bontebok, occurring naturally in the Fynbos and Renosterveld areas of the Western Cape, and the blesbok occurring in the highveld.
The korrigum, also known as Senegal hartebeest, is a subspecies of the tsessebe, an African antelope.

Engraved by Gustav Ludwig Heinrich Mützel (1839 - 1893). A German artist, famous for his mammal and bird paintings, including the illustrations for the second edition of Alfred Edmund Brehm's ‘Thierleben’ and Richard Lydekker's ‘The Royal Natural History’.

This illustration is taken from ‘The Royal Natural History’ edited by Richard Lydekker and published by Frederick Warne & Co. London and New York, 1894.

The page size is 10 inch x 6 5/8 inch

The engraving is in very good condition. Reverse side is blank.
