Doc Savage is a fictional character of the competent man hero type, who first appeared in American pulp magazines! Clark Savage Jr. first appeared in March 1933 in the first issue of Doc Savage Magazine! He is a scientist, explorer, detective, and warrior who "rights wrongs and punishes evildoers" and his base is on the 86th floor of a world-famous New York skyscraper Empire State Building! Doc Savage fights against evil with the assistance of the "Fabulous Five". He was created by Publisher Henry W. Ralston and Editor John L. Nanovic at Street & Smith Publications! The character first appeared on a movie screen in a 1975 film, Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze…due to the popularity of Marvel Comics appearances!
This 68 page Giant reprints Doc Savage #1 and 2: "The Man of Bronze!" Plot by Roy Thomas, script by Steve Englehart, pencils by Ross Andru, inks by Jim Mooney, as Doc Savage survives an attempt on his life by a sniper. The assassin is dressed as an ancient Mayan warrior but Doc Savage and his men give chase when they go after the shooter. Savage corners the shooter at a construction site and apprehends him. He attempts to hypnotize the killer in an effort to learn more information from him but he declares that he would never betray the Son of the Feathered Serpent and leaps to his death. Back at their headquarters, Savage finds a warning on the wall telling him to turn back from his quest lest the red death strike once again. Savage reiterates that will not rest until he finds the men who murdered his father. He vows to continue his father’s work in helping those in need. The final epilogue depicts another Mayan Warrior contacting a mysterious figure known as the Son of the Feathered Serpent. The warrior notifies the Feathered Serpent that the assassination attempt has failed. The Feathered figure orders the warrior to return to Hidalgo in anticipation of another confrontation with Doc Savage in that country!
"Master of the Red Death!" Script by Englehart, pencils by Jim Mooney, inks by Ernie Chan sees finds Savage and his men being shot down in a plane over the jungles of Central America. He manages to land his plane at the airport of Hidalgo. He is greeted by the President of the country and the Secretary of State, Don Rubio Gorro. The two dignitaries make sure that Savage and his men are OK and bid them farewell as the move on to accomplish their mission. Savage and his men obtain a pontoon airplane and fly to the Valley of the Vanished. They disembark their plane and are immediately attacked by a group of Mayans! The Feathered Serpent then contaminates the community water supply with a germ that he refers to as the red death. The villagers immediately start to drop as their skin becomes afflicted with red splotches. Savage concludes that the virus can only be emanating from one place. He takes a sample of the water and develops an antidote! Savage eludes his pursuers and begins administering the cure himself. The villagers quickly recover but Doc Savage is attacked once more by a desperate Feathered Serpent. He leaps at Savage with a knife but plunges to his death as he falls from atop a pyramid. They take off his mask and the Serpent is revealed to be none other than Rubio Gorro, Hidalgo’s Secretary of State. Savage is initiated as a member of the tribe and is deemed worthy to receive the gold promised to his father!
Next is a five-page text piece about Doc Savage and the gang by Robert Sampson, accompanied by illustrations from the comics. And two pin-ups (Tony DeZuniga). 2-page cover gallery reproducing the covers to Doc Savage 2-8 which have John Buscema pencils!
