Seller's Description
GIANT-SIZE DEFENDERS 1, 2, 4 & 5! High Grades! Worth $187.00! $155.00 Shipped!!
These awesome Marvel Comics Giant-Size Comics were first released in the summer of 1974 and are coveted by Comics’ Collector’s today!
I am the original owner...these are all bought by me off the newsstands when they were released! I’ll be listing many sets of these in the coming weeks!
1 – July 1974 – VF – I’d call this VF/NM except for very slight corner wear and the small .50 cents written in felt pen at the top of the back cover…this is clean and colorful with all pages off-white! “The Way They Were!” The Defenders, Doctor Strange, Hulk, and Valkyrie, are headquartered in Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum. Val tells Clea that she wishes she knew more about her teammates. Clea casts a spell to give Val visions of their early lives….“Banished to Outer Space” is reprinted from THE INCREDIBLE HULK (1962) #3 as The Hulk is trapped in a spaceship! In the next room, Next she shows Namor’s past…“Bird of Prey!” by Bill Everett is from SUB-MARINER (1954) #41 and shows Teenage Namor is flying through the skies and is fired on by a plane, He seizes it and releases its “eggs,” which explode harmlessly on an iceberg, then rips its tail off, sending it into a death spiral. When Namor returns home, he is told he is a hero for downing a Nazi warplane! Dr. Strange “To Catch a Magician!” is from STRANGE TALES #145, as Strange takes on the Mystic Mr. Rasputin…who suddenly attacks them with a Mystical Enchantment and sent to an odd fantasy land, Hulk is once again trapped in a spaceship, Namor is fighting Nazi planes, and Strange is facing Mister Rasputin. Strange casts a spell drawing them all together where they beat Rasputin and latch onto Clea’s mind to draw them back where they came from. Val admits she has learned that her formidable allies are also good men! “The Peerless Power of the Silver Surfer!” is reprinted from FANTASTIC FOUR ANNUAL #5, as the Silver Surfer defeats Quasimodo!
2 – Oct. 1974 – NM- - “H…as in Hulk…Hell…and Holocaust!” Hulk is on a rampage through New York City, driving off the Police and National Guard and their heavy artillery just annoys Hulk into leaving; then a little girl named Laurie offers to help him and leads him to a building of seemingly endless steps going downward—until they reach Hell where Laurie reveals “herself” to be the demon Laurox who sets an army of giant Bruce Banners on Hulk, beating him and mocking him…This scene is being shown to Doctor Strange and the Defenders in his Sanctum Sanctorum and Strange, Valkyrie, and Nighthawk search the city but cannot find him. Strange decides to call in specialist Daimon Hellstrom and request his help. Hellstrom reluctantly agrees and transforms into the Son of Satan. In New York, SoS easily locates the cloaked building and they enter to find four staircases going down. Each hero takes one and they are each led to a demonic assault: Dr. Strange faces the spirits of the dead who perished through his medical malpractice. Valkyrie is attacked by faceless giantesses who remove her face to symbolize her identity confusion. A mob drags Nighthawk to a gallows to be punished for his criminal past. Daimon sees his mother tormented by demons and he can’t save her! Dr. Strange fights off his guilt then rescues the others by helping them to see their various torments as illusions and are taken in the presence of Asmodeus who has offered the Defenders’ souls to Satannish in exchange for a return to the world of the living. He tries to destroy them directly but finds the Son of Satan is immune to his attacks. The clock strikes twelve and Asmodeus’ deadline is up; the floor cracks open and Satannish reaches up and drags him down to the lower realm. SoS thanks Strange for the chance to pay back the forces of evil! “Sub-Mariner” by Bill Everett from YOUNG MEN (1953 series) #25 and shows a spate of people seen jumping into the sea and vanishing completely, presumably the victims of sharks. Betty Dean tells Prince Namor, the Sub-Mariner and he meets a weird looking fellow who mocks Namor then sees the man going into the water later and follows him, only to end up fighting a great white shark and killing it. The next morning the weird guy is found dead on the beach. That night, Namor meets a woman coming out of the sea and forces her to confess that she is one of a race of water people from another planet who have projected themselves mentally to Earth, using sharks as hosts and able to turn human on land. The woman escapes and kills herself for betraying her race. Namor and the Coast Guard set a trap for the shark people, capturing them in nets and dumping them on the beach to die! “Black Knight” by Fred Kida is reprinted from BLACK KNIGHT (1955 series) #4! An enemy makes a suit of armor resembling that of the real Black Knight and uses it to frame Sir Percy for various crimes. The fake one leads an attack against Camelot and King Arthur demands that the two Black Knights settle the matter with a joust. Sir Percy wins and is vindicated! “Beyond the Purple Veil!” is from STRANGE TALES #119!
4 – Apr. 1975 – NM- - “Too Cold a Night for Dying!” by Steve Gerber, Don McGregor, Roger Slifer, Don Heck, Vince Colletta and Petra Goldberg tellsof The Defenders and Yellowjacket are on the trail of Egghead, who planted a bomb in the car of Kyle Richmond and injured both Richmond and Trixie Starr(Egghead’s Niece) who loses her left arm. Hank Pym speaks to Trish who tells him Egghead is alive and living in the Bowery. Hank vows to avenge her…but he then finds out The Defenders believe it was the Squadron Sinister and he begs Hank to stop them! The Squadron are at their observatory hideout, plotting revenge against Nighthawk and the Defenders when Hulk smashes in through the wall, followed by teammates. Hulk punches out Hyperion, Strange magically wraps up Whizzer so he can’t move, Dr. Spectrum grabs a gun that absorbs energy from Hulk so that he reverts to Bruce Banner. Then Hyperion knocks out Val, Spectrum frees Whizzer and he clouts Dr. Strange so the good guys are captured. They wind up in a dungeon! Bruce Hulk’s out, YJ helps and soon the Heroes are free! “Arctic Zone!” by Bill Everett from THE HUMAN TORCH (1940 series) #4 sees a influenza epidemic strike Alaska but the weather is too bad for planes to deliver the new serum to cure it. Namor, the Sub-Mariner, is asked to get the serum through. With a pack on his back, Subby swims underwater until the sea starts icing up, trapping him. Scout planes search for him and one crashes nearby, melting the ice and freeing Subby. Icebergs threaten a small town and Subby helps the scout planes evacuate the town. Subby takes a plane and tries bombing the icebergs, setting the town on fire. So he bombs the icebergs causing the town to flood, putting out the fires but, well, flooding the town. So Subby blows up the town’s gasoline supply, destroying the icebergs and allowing the flood waters to pour out. And then he delivers the serum to the hospital! “Witchcraft in the Wax Museum!” is reprinted from STRANGE TALES #121!
5 – July 1975 – VF/NM –“ Eelar Moves in Mysterious Ways!” is by Steve Gerber, Len Wein, Gerry Conway, Don Heck, Jim Mooney, Mike Esposito & Dave Hunt as The Guardians of the Galaxy are stranded in the present and help the Defenders against Eelar and save a little boy! At a gathering in the Sanctum Sanctorum, the Guardians explain that the Badoon conquer Earth in AD 3007 and they are seeking records of an attempted Badoon invasion in the 20th century but are having no luck (because only the Silver Surfer knew about it, in SILVER SURFER #2). Strange’s primary concern is returning their guest to their own time…on their spaceship, Martinex learns that the little boy is a young Vance Astro!! “Quoth the Nighthawk, "Nevermore!" is by Roy Thomas, Gene Colan, Syd Shores & Artie Simek as Daredevil is upstaged by the new hero in town who is only in the game for the glory…but fighting Nighthawk will be no easy win! From Daredevil # 62!
