Seller's Description
Original French 22 inch x 15 1/4 inch page with printed photograph titled GERBEVILLER
Gerbéviller is a commune in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department in north-eastern France. It is 20 miles (as the crow flies) south east of Nancy and 45 miles south-south-east of Metz. Culturally and historically, it is part of Lorraine. Around August 24, 1914, the town was occupied by German troops in World War I. In retaliation for the stubborn defense of the town by the French 2e Bataillon de Chasseurs à Pied, and for the actions of French civilians who took up arms to assist in the defence, the German occupiers systematically burned and pillaged about 80% of the town and massacred its population.
The page comes from the French magazine L’ILLUSTRATION, September 1915
The photograph is in very good condition with a vertical centre fold.
