Seller's Description

Original circa 1700 15 inch x 9 inch Engraving from a book titled ENGRAVINGS FROM THE BIBLE.

Adam and Eve hiding in the garden surrounded by various scared animals.

Print by Michael van der Gucht (1660 - 1725). Engraver and painter, primarily working as a book-illustrator. Vandergucht was born in Antwerp, where he became a pupil of Philibert Bouttats. He joined the Antwerp artists' guild, the Guild of St Luke, in 1673. He moved to England before July 1688, where he engraved portraits, book illustrations, and architectural prints. He trained his sons Gerard Vandergucht (1696/7–1776) and Jan Vandergucht (or John) (c.1699-c.1730) as engravers, and also George Vertue.

After Gerard Hoet (1648 - 1733). Gerard Hoet trained with his father and with a pupil of Cornelis van Poelenburgh. Van Poelenburgh was an Italianate landscape painter who was one of the first Dutch painters to incorporate into his paintings the romantic ruins and fragments of antique statuary he had seen in Italy.
In 1672 Hoet moved to The Hague, then spent a year in Paris, returning to the Netherlands via Brussels. Settling in Utrecht, he founded a drawing academy in 1697. Seventeen years later he returned to The Hague, where he spent the rest of his life. He depicted mainly religious, mythological, or classical subjects set in landscapes, usually on a small scale. Less frequently, he painted these subjects in larger formats with multiple figures and in an elegant, classicizing style. Hoet also painted portraits and genre pieces, along with designing illustrations for bibles. His book on drawing was published in 1712.

Inscription: “Pl. 6 page 42 / And Adam and his Wife hid themselves from the Presence of the Lord God, amongst the trees of the Garden. / And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, where art thou?.”

Image size 9 1/2 inch x 6 5/8 inch

The engraving is in good condition with some age-related toning and minor defects from handling.
