Hackman’s brilliant, breathless performance as Popeye Doyle unexpectedly turned him into a star. The movie won 5 Oscars, including best picture, best actor (Hackman), director and screenplay. Based on a real narcotics bust in 1961, it boasts a remarkably strong narrative drive, powerful effects, a zest for New York low-life and a classic car chase.
