Seller's Description
Original 1842 5 1/8 inch x 7 1/2 inch engraving titled FERRY OVER THE ORONTES.
The Orontes or Asi is a northward-flowing river which begins in Lebanon and flows through Syria and Turkey before entering the Mediterranean Sea.
Engraved by Joseph Wilson Lowry (1803 - 1879). Engraver in Britain, specialising in topographic and geological subjects. Exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1829 and 1830. Son of engraver Wilson Lowry.
After William Henry Bartlett (1809 - 1854). Topographical draughtsman. Apprenticed to the antiquary and publisher John Britton, for whom he made illustrations until 1831. Travelled extensively producing illustrations for travel books, both those written by others and his own. Exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Royal Watercolour Society.
