Original 1842 4 7/8 inch x 7 1/2 inch engraving titled THE ELYSIAN FIELDS, FROM CAPE MISENO.
The Elysian Fields, also called Elysium, is the final resting place of the souls of the heroic and the virtuous in Greek mythology and religion.
Engraved by M.J. Starling (active 1829 - 1867). Landscape steel engraver.
After William Leighton Leitch (1804 – 1883). A master Scottish landscape watercolour painter and illustrator. He was Drawing Master to Queen Victoria for 22 years. He was Vice President of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, on Pall Mall in London, for 20 years.
Cape Miseno is the headland that marks the northwestern limit of the Gulf of Naples as well as the Bay of Pozzuoli in southern Italy. The cape is directly across from the island of Procida and is named for Misenus, a character in Virgil's ‘Aeneid’.
