Text from the free encyclopedia WIKIPEDIA may appear below to give a little background information:
*************
Elham (pronounced Eel-um) is a village in East Kent situated approximately 9 miles (14 km) south of Canterbury and 5 miles (8 km) north east of Folkestone in the Elham Valley.
The origin of the village's name has always been a matter of argument[2]. The village is listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Alham[3]. This may have derived from Ulaham, which it is referred to in an Anglo Saxon charter of 855A.D.[4] The suffix "ham" is derived from the German word "heim", meaning "home"[4]. Thus, it is assumed that Ulaham means homestead of a person named Ula.[4] Another theory is that the name originates from the presence of eels once found in the Nailbourne centuries ago.
